Grades K-3

The elementary school is kindergarten through third grade. Small class sizes enable us to provide small group and individualized instruction. The low student/teacher ratio and the team of specialists for the enrichment and exploratory classes meet the unique needs and abilities of students in all elementary grades. Starting in kindergarten, every child works with special teachers in music, physical education and Spanish. Art instruction and technology in the lab are introduced in kindergarten on a project base. Participation in the Science Fair begins in the first grade.

An integrated approach to language arts (Kindergarten) & (1st Grade) strengthens all academic areas. Reading is taught within a strong framework of phonics and early literacy. Excellent literature for children is found throughout the elementary language arts programs along with leveled books to challenge the learner at the right place. Writing as a process is firmly in place and students are given a variety of opportunities to develop their communication and writing skills. Students write daily in Writers Workshop, an experience in writng to inspire sharing personal moments that read like a story. Standard conventions of writing are taught through the use of journals, research reports, essays, creative stories, and poems.

Mathematics is based on learning the facts, concepts and the language of math. Problem-solving and logical thinking skills as well as computational proficiency are emphasized throughout the elementary curriculum. Concepts are internalized through the use of concrete materials, hands-on activities, and application to daily life. Additional math teachers enable math classes to be structured around a small group of students all working at similar styles of learning, be it mental, manipulative, or conceptual.

Science and social studies are activity-oriented, giving our students the opportunity to discover their history and place in the world. Hands-on cooperative learning activities enable science to be "real" and history to come alive.

All students have physical education daily. The primary program centers on sensory/motor skill development and builds to physical fitness and specific skills necessary for a variety of games and sports.

Spanish begins in kindergarten with a curriculum designed to introduce children to the Spanish speaking cultures. By fourth grade, students are comfortable with the spoken and written language.

Computers are found in every classroom. Students learn a variety of ways the computer can enhance their written work using a word program, desktop publisher, and internet research, as well as the application of spreadsheets and databases. Students learn to write, publish, research and make digital presentations to augment their learning.

Music and art round out the elementary enrichment experiences. Our students are given a full musical experience in voice, instrument, and appreciation of music from around the world. At the kindergarten through 2nd grade level, formal art instruction is done on a project basis.  A rich texture of artistic experiences awaits our students when they enter the art lab. The kiln makes it possible for these experiences to include working with clay.
