Barnhart Middle School ARC is proud of our accomplishments in the 2006 School Club Roundup.  The contest did not unfolded exactly as I had envisioned but then I am new to HF and contesting myself.  Special thanks to our Club Trustee, Tim Adams, N6DLC, our Technology Director and Upper School Computer Teacher, for establishing a digital mode for the contest.  PSK31 on 20-meters has turned out to be our bread-and-butter.  We spoke to several school clubs in this mode and several DX countries as well.

The brightest part of the entire week long experience was introducing our hobby to more than 200 students at Barnhart School, in Arcadia, California.  We showed our eighty 7th and 8th graders the Walter Cronkite video produced by the ARRL on Monday morning during our daily chapel and kicked off the week explaining that our hobby was also a service.  They got that message loud and clear.  Our 4th through 6th graders listened to some Morse code and learned to spell their names phonetically, a big hit with the younger kids.  We had 4th-6th grade students through the radio room in groups of 10.

Another bright spot was guest control operators joining us in the radio room in the afternoons along with many eager young people.  Brent Broyles, N6VLM, our Parents' Group President and father of two Barnhart students, Norm and Doris Johnson, N8NJ and KD6JUS, long-time friends, and Ed Wright, KB6THO, one of our teachers husbands and father of two Barnhart students all offered their time and support.

All-in-all the week has been a great success.  We have introduced our hobby to these young people, made some QSOs with student operators, and swelled the ranks of our school club which is now expanding from the middle school were we began last summer down to the elementary school.  I am quite certain we'll have many more eager and excited students attending our weekly club meetings and then signing up for our Summer School course to study for their Tech licenses!

Thank you to Lew, N2RQ, the ARRL, and all the teachers and school clubs for supporting the contest.  We’ll see you all next year, and hopefully we’ll see some new schools in California get involved in the SCR, too.
