The library media center is located in the lower
level of the main school. Students, teachers, parents
and guests of the school are welcome to visit.
Monday to Thursday 9:00 to 4:00.
Friday 9:00 to 3:00.
Book Clubs on campus are always interested in complimentary author talks, story telling from grandparents/parents, and illustrators or graphic novel demonstrations. Members meet during their lunch periods.
Volunteers are always welcomed. Help is needed in circulation, shelving, book talk and story telling. Assistance is also needed before and after school hours, lunch, recess and class times.
We donate used books each year to those in need. Organizations needing books may contact the librarian.
History
Barnhart School’s library was created
in the early 1950’s with donations from members of the
Santa Anita Church and Barnhart School faculty. It was
serviced by parent volunteers until the 1970’s when
faculty members volunteered to help with the few shelves in
the lower level. In the 1980’s parents again stepped
up to manage the books and provide an automated circulation
system. In the early 1990s a part-time library clerk
was hired to have scheduled library afternoon time for the
classes. A parent created and donated a customized automated
circulation system. Fundraising from the Barnhart Parents
Group in 2004, made it possible for the library to double
in floor size, furnishings and scope of service. Four
computers, one printer, a TV/Video/DVD system, and the Accelerated
Reading program were added. Best of all, the library’s
hours of operation almost tripled. A full-time librarian
is currently available to help teachers, students, and parents.
Birthday Books
A great way to add a book to the library with your name plate in the book. Organized by Barnhart Parents Group (BPG), Birthday Book Chairs. Students who select books are then presented with their gifts at Chapel before the student body and keep it for two weeks. Your picture is placed on the library bulletin board and your book placed in a special stack for the school year.
Book Fair
This annual fundraising event is hosted by a local book store. It is normally held in March. The community is encouraged to buy books for themselves, classrooms and for the library. Funds are used to buy books students and teachers want to read for pleasure as well as for materials and digital resources needed for school.
Donations
Monetary gifts to the library are welcomed and may be designated as memorials. Donations of library materials/media are also welcomed and are subject to library approval and discretion.
Circulation Policy
As of 2005 students are allowed to check out
two books at a time. Exceptions are made when extra
books are needed for school reports or holiday/pleasure reading.
Books are circulated for a period of two weeks and may be
renewed for an additional two weeks. Faculty and staff
have privileges of checking out an unlimited number of books
for either a 30 day or unlimited time check out period.
Parents of kindergarten-8th grade may check out books under
their child’s name. Daycare personnel may also
check out books. Reference materials are available for
checkout to teachers.
Birthday Books are circulated to the donors for the first two weeks and are due two weeks after the Birthday Books presentation in the chapel. Birthday Books are not included in the number of books allowed per student.
Over due Policy
There is a grace period of seven days after a book is due. After seven days the child will be charged one dollar per week for up to one month. Items that are more than one month overdue are fined for replacement costs, taxes plus a service fee.
Internet Use
Technology and internet access will be used
to access the library collection and current information from
the World Wide Web. Computers in the library will be
used as an educational tool under the supervision of the librarian,
teachers and childcare staff. An Acceptable Use Policy
contract must be signed by students and their parents before
use each year. Content filtering is in place to protect
students from inappropriate web sites.
Request for Reconsideration of Library Materials
Persons from the Barnhart School community wishing
to request the removal of a particular item in the library
collection must submit a Request for Reconsideration of Library
Materials Form (see librarian for form) which will be reviewed
by a committee. The committee will consist of a member
of the faculty, a parent, the head of school and the librarian.
Reviews will be made in reference to the mission statement
and the selection criteria of the collection development policy.
Journal reviews and any other materials submitted by the requesting
individual will be reviewed. A response will be made
by the librarian within 30 days of receiving the request for
reconsideration.
