While still in self-contained classrooms, fifth and sixth graders apply new skills and expand their horizons. Science and history are explored in depth, while literature and writing allows these students to see their unique world from new perspectives.

In September, 1986, Barnhart School was expanded to include seventh and eighth grades, which is known as Barnhart Middle School.  Out of the middle school concept evolves a program designed to meet the unique needs of students in transition from childhood to adolescence. The middle school program includes a rigorous academic, high school preparatory curriculum in English, World and American History, Life and Earth Science, Algebra, and Spanish.  Students leave Barnhart with a full year of high school Algebra and Spanish I.  In high school, they frequently place in advanced levels of these subjects as well as honors levels in English and History.  A commitment to applying knowledge from the academic subjects is seen in the eight exploratory experiences also included in the program.  Each class is taken for 9 weeks in groups of no more than ten students in the areas of art appreciation, music appreciation, computers, life skills, woodshop, and leadership.  All students also participate daily in club activities and physical education with additional opportunities in after-school sports teams.  The Barnhart Middle School experience is rich in diversity, academic strength, teamwork, developing complex thinking skills, making connections, seeking patterns, encouraging self-reflection, and building social skills.
