Christmas is a time to experience the joys of giving. That is exactly what happens when Barnhart Middle Schoolers get together with students from the Byron E. Thompson School for their annual holiday crafts creations. Located in El Monte, Byron E. Thompson serves Kindergarten through eighth grade orthopedically challenged students. In a true 'gift exchange' Barnhart students acquire some understanding of the unique challenges and perspectives of young people who may be dealing with physical impairments while everyone has an opportunity to make new friendships and beautiful seasonal gifts.
This yearly Christmas tradition started with two dedicated Barnhart parents, Paulette Large and Tracy Martin, who both work at Byron E. Thompson. Wanting to find a way for their kids to serve the community, they connected the two groups of kids to share their 'gifts', starting a 17 year celebration of service and giving.
