Music Program
The elementary music program offers a dynamic and engaging experience for students from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through 5th grade, fostering a lifelong appreciation for music. All grade levels participate in activities that emphasize movement, listening skills, instrumentation, and exposure to a wide variety of musical styles, including cultural music from around the world. Through singing, dancing, and interactive lessons, students explore the richness of global music traditions while developing foundational musical concepts.
The music program at Barnhart opened a whole world of creativity and art for me and sent me on a path to pursue music in high school and college. - Erin, Alumna 2006
Music is the art of sounds in the movement of time.- Ferruccio Busoni
In Addition To Its Core Curriculum
The Music Program supports cross-curricular learning by enriching classroom studies through music. For example, the music program enhances second-grade Pioneer and Westward Movement studies by teaching students traditional square dances, giving them a hands-on, joyful connection to this period of American history. Fourth graders dive into the history of the California hide trade with lively sea shanties that are sung to the Captain of the Brig Pilgrim on their overnight field trip in the fall. Fifth grade explores counter-cultural music of the 1960s and 70, as well as spiritual songs sung by African Americans in the 1860s.
The Elementary Music Program also plays a central role in the school community. We coordinate a highly anticipated holiday winter performance where every class participates in a fun and festive showcase of their musical growth. During our GrandFriend’s Day celebration, students delight their families with songs and sometimes an instrumental performance.
In addition to performances, the music teacher collaborates closely with individual classrooms, offering extra support for class plays through vocal coaching and stage presence guidance. This collaboration further enhances students’ confidence, creativity, and performance skills.
