Language Arts instruction focuses on reading analysis and comprehension, written expression, vocabulary, and grammar skills. Students are exposed to a wide variety of literature that serves as a foundation for developing expository paragraph and essay writing skills, persuasive and narrative techniques, and public speaking confidence.

Science instruction builds on elementary standards to further develop students’ scientific inquiry skills. 6th graders learn earth science, 7th graders focus on biology, and 8th graders begin their physics and chemistry journey. All students continue to use the scientific method to analyze current global events and complete hands-on lab experiments.

Instruction continues to prioritize our school-wide commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Students are exposed to new concepts, cultures, and perspectives while learning about key events and people in our world’s history. 6th graders focus on Ancient Cultures and Civilizations, 7th graders on and 8th graders on American history. Multiple perspectives are highlighted and students are asked to discuss and synthesize information learned.

Using Illustrative Math, this is a multi-year study of Algebra. 6th grade students use the foundations built in elementary to further develop their general math skills such as area, volume, percent, etc. 7th graders focus on pre-algebra, and 8th graders complete their study of Algebra by the end of middle school. All students develop critical thinking skills and apply real-world foundations to mathematics.

Uses the four tenets of language acquisition: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students read chapter books in Spanish and learn grammar, conjugations, and vocabulary through discussion and writing. Students learn and exceed world language standards while incorporating the culture of all Speaking countries.

Middle School Studios are immersive, interdisciplinary learning experiences that transform the afternoon into a time for creativity, innovation, leadership, and real-world problem solving. Rather than traditional elective classes, Studios provide students with opportunities to explore their passions, collaborate across grade levels, develop new skills, and apply academic learning in meaningful ways. On alternating years, our 6th and 7th graders go to AstroCamp in Idyllwild, where they have a week-long, hands-on Science adventure. They enjoy activities where they explore Space, train like NASA astronauts, take a look into the cosmos through our state-of-the-art telescopes, rock climb on Mars, fly through the air on the 2,000-foot zip line, and so much more!

On alternating years, our 6th and 7th grade students travel to Yosemite National Park with the Science Teacher where they explore both Earth Science and Life Science. This is an opportunity to learn hands-on science in one of the world’s most stunning geologic wonders.

Barnhart 8th graders pack their things, board the plane, and travel to Washington DC for a week-long adventure with their History Teacher. They dive into the foundations of our nation, visit the Capitol Building, see monuments and Monticello, and many more places instrumental to the history of the country.
